Pastoral Care

A Sanctuary of Support

At Epsom College Tokyo, pastoral care is embedded into every aspect of school life. Rooted in the values of kindness, integrity, and respect, our approach is designed to ensure every child feels known, supported, and confident throughout their Prep School journey.

We believe wellbeing and learning are deeply connected. Through strong relationships, structured routines, enhanced PSHE, and close partnership with families, students are supported academically, socially, and emotionally from the earliest years onwards.

The Day Boarding Experience

Our day boarding model provides families with the structure, flexibility, and pastoral support of a British independent school experience within a modern Tokyo context.

The extended school day is carefully designed to balance learning, wellbeing, enrichment, movement, and rest within a calm and well supervised environment. Before and after school provision offers additional opportunities for guided reading, enrichment activities, independent learning, and meaningful social interaction.

More than extended care, day boarding creates a strong sense of belonging and community, helping students develop confidence, independence, and positive routines from an early age while supporting the needs of modern families.

A Diverse and Inclusive Community

Epsom College Tokyo brings together families from a wide range of backgrounds within a warm and respectful school community. Students are encouraged to develop curiosity, empathy, and appreciation for different perspectives while building strong friendships and a shared sense of belonging.

Grounded in British values and enriched by Japanese and international perspectives, the community reflects the globally minded environment students will grow within throughout their educational journey.

Knowing Every Child

Strong relationships are central to the Prep School experience. Teachers and pastoral staff take time to understand each child’s strengths, interests, and developmental needs, ensuring students feel supported both inside and outside the classroom.

This personalised approach helps students build confidence, emotional security, and a strong sense of self as they progress through the school.

Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

PSHE is embedded throughout school life and plays an important role in supporting students’ emotional wellbeing, relationships, confidence, and personal development.

Through age appropriate learning and guided discussion, students develop self awareness, empathy, resilience, healthy habits, and positive social skills. Themes such as wellbeing, digital awareness, relationships, and global citizenship are introduced progressively across the Prep School years within a supportive and nurturing environment.

Health & Wellbeing Support

Student wellbeing is supported through a holistic pastoral approach that prioritises both physical and emotional health. Trained staff and pastoral leaders work closely with families to ensure students feel safe, cared for, and supported throughout the school day.

Age appropriate wellbeing education, movement, healthy routines, and strong pastoral relationships all contribute to a calm and positive learning environment where students can thrive academically and personally.

Where required, students also have access to appropriate medical support and guidance during the school day.

Nutrition & Healthy Habits

Healthy nutrition forms an important part of student wellbeing and daily school life at Epsom College Tokyo. Students are encouraged to develop positive habits and balanced routines through access to nutritious meals and a calm, social dining environment.

Meals are thoughtfully planned to support growing children throughout the school day, reflecting both international and Asian influences while accommodating a range of dietary requirements where possible.

Snack and meal provision throughout the extended school day also supports concentration, wellbeing, and sustained engagement in learning and enrichment activities.

The Extended School Day

Our wraparound care programme is designed to provide families with flexibility and reassurance within a structured and enriching Prep School environment.

Before and after school provision offers students additional opportunities for:

  • Guided reading
  • Supervised homework and independent study
  • Enrichment activities
  • Movement and recreation
  • Quiet reflection and social time

Rather than simply extending supervision, the programme is intentionally designed to support student wellbeing, independence, routine, and balanced development throughout the day.

A Calm & Structured Environment

Consistency and routine play an important role in helping children feel secure and confident. Throughout the school day, students benefit from clear structures, attentive pastoral support, and carefully balanced transitions between learning, enrichment, rest, and play.

This supportive environment helps students develop independence, self regulation, and confidence while creating a strong sense of belonging within the school community.

Partnership with Families

We believe strong partnerships between school and home are essential to each child’s success and wellbeing. Regular communication, pastoral collaboration, and shared understanding help create consistency and support throughout the student journey.

As a founding school community, we value close relationships with families and aim to create an environment where parents feel informed, supported, and actively connected to school life.
